Falls are one of the greatest causes of serious health problems among older adults. Falls, with our without injury, carry a heavy quality of life impact. The effect of a fall can greatly affect one’s quality of life such as limiting functional independence, mobility, and social activities. The fear of falling can result in further declines such as depression, isolation, anxiety, and a less active lifestyle.
There are various potential risk factors associated with falls including vertigo, syncope, postural hypotension, poor Vision, unsteady balance, previous falls, and environmental barriers.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
- One in four Americans 65+ fall each year, but less than half tell their doctor
- One out of five falls causes a serious injury such as broken bones or a head injury
- Falls result in more than 2.8 million injuries in emergency departments, annually
- Over 800,000 individuals are hospitalized because of fall injury, most often because of a head injury or hip fracture
- More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling, usually falling sideways
- Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency department for a fall; every 19 seconds an older adult dies from a fall
- Falling once doubles your chances of falling again
Rehability offers a balance and fall prevention program which includes a fall risk screen, assessment, intervention, and education. We use the OTAGO Exercise Program (OEP), which is an individually tailored balance, strength, and fall prevention evidence-based program. Evidence-based programs are based on research and provide documented health benefits, so you can be confident they work. Results from the research into Otago exercises include:
- Falls among people participating in the Otago was reduced by 30% to 66% compared to controls who were not doing Otago exercises.
- After one year, injuries from falls were reduced by 28% in participants performing Otago exercises.
- The Otago exercise program was most effective at reducing falls for people over the age of 80 years, but people who were younger still found benefits.
- Seventy percent of patients performing Otago exercises continued doing the program after one year
Our Balance and Fall Prevention Program includes one-to-one visits in our clinic, with an OTAGO-trained fall prevention specialist, who will implement a program specifically for you and help you master the program exercises. The most benefit comes from individuals who continue the program, at home, on a daily basis. Following completion of scheduled clinic visits, your therapist will monitor your program with monthly phone calls during the self-management phase of the program, for one year.
Who should be referred to the Otago Exercise Program?
- People who report falling in the last year
- People who have muscle weakness or balance problems
- People with a fear of falling
