Neurorehabilitation

WHAT IS NEUROREHABILITATION?
HOW WE CAN HELP

Neurorehabilitation is the process of reducing symptoms and maximizing overall function to improve one’s quality of life. Receiving a diagnosis such as Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or suffering a stroke can be devastating for an individual, their loved ones, and their caregivers. Learning to adapt to these changes can be a challenge as well, not only at home but in the community.

Rehability aims to optimize functional performance and participation in everyday life tasks for people with nervous system disorders through targeted treatments and restorative &/or compensatory strategies. Our therapists can assist with recovery from acute stages to learning new daily living skills to coping and managing chronic effects. Using problem-solving techniques and community resources, such as support groups and community organizations, can also help with a feeling of self-empowerment and taking control of one’s life again.

WE SPECIALIZE IN STROKE REHABILITATION

Following a stroke, receiving therapy is an important part of your recovery process. Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy help you develop your skills and confidence to manage activities that are important to your health and wellbeing. After a stroke, you may be facing a range of difficulties that make it hard for you to do the things you would like. These difficulties can include physical problems, difficulties with your memory or attention, problems with your vision or sensation and emotional problems such as anxiety or depression.

Neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT) is a hands-on treatment approach used by physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists. This therapy uses guided or facilitated movements as a treatment strategy to reinforce weak movement patterns and to discourage overactive ones.

Our Occupational Therapist is trained in NDT and has completed advanced training which enables the proper assessment and treatment to help individuals become as functional and independent as possible. Research shows that occupational therapy should be a part of the rehabilitation process because it effectively improves a client’s performance, allowing him or her to live life to its fullest.

THE USE OF ORTHOTICS AFTER A STROKE

Orthotists can assist an individual with bracing to support an affected limb in a functional position. Bracing can also assist with energy efficiency when walking, preventing contractures and enhancing your overall quality of life. Rehability uses a team approach and can offer occupational therapy, physical therapy, and orthotics under one roof to better meet your individual needs.
